How to Care for your Leather

How to Care for Your Leather Goods (Complete Guide)
Howdy! In this short blog post I’ll do my best to educate y’all on how to best care for your Leathergoods, whether its our brand new wallet or a belt that’s years old, each Leathergoods that rolls off my bench deserves the utmost care and in this article I’ll let you know just how I do it!
Proper leather care is essential if you want your items to last for years and develop a rich, natural character over time. Whether you own a wallet, belt, bag, or other handcrafted good, understanding how to maintain leather will help preserve both its appearance and durability.
The first step in caring for leather is understanding the type you own. High-quality full-grain leather is the strongest and most durable form of leather available, both veg-tanned and oil tanned leathers are care for pretty similarly. Because it retains the natural grain of the hide, it not only lasts longer but also develops a beautiful patina as it ages. This makes full-grain leather the preferred choice for anyone looking to invest in a long-lasting, heirloom-quality product.
Regular cleaning is key to maintaining leather goods. Dust and dirt can be gently removed using a soft, dry cloth. For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth with a small amount of mild soap like Saddle Soap. I like to shine shoes starting with a through cleaning with Saddle Soap. Be careful not to oversaturate the leather, as excess moisture can strip natural oils and lead to damage. Treat leather like you would your own skin; hydrate and keep clean as often as necessary.
Conditioning is one of the most important steps in leather care. Over time, leather can dry out, especially veg-tan leather that doesn’t contain as many natural oils. Applying a high-quality conditioner such as Bickmore Bick 4 Leather Conditioner or Fiebing’s Leather Balm with Atom Wax every few months will help restore moisture, prevent cracking, and maintain flexibility. Always apply conditioner with a soft cloth in thin layers, and allow it to absorb fully before use.
Storage also plays a major role in leather care. Keep your leather goods in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or heat sources. Items like saddlery and tack as well as outdoor goods like satchels and apparel need extra care as these are exposed to the elements more often. Excessive heat can cause fading and drying, while humidity can lead to mold or warping. For structured items like bags, consider using inserts or stuffing to help maintain their shape.
One of the most appealing aspects of high-quality leather is its ability to become a true heirloom. Over time, well-maintained leather develops a unique patina that reflects its use and environment as well as creating itself to be a unique piece just for you. Instead of wearing out, full-grain leather improves with age, gaining depth and character that you just can’t get by using synthetic materials.
If you’re investing in quality pieces like a handcrafted belt, proper care ensures it will last for decades. For example, a piece like the Buffalo Leather Belt will only get better with time when regularly cleaned and conditioned.
With a simple care routine and the right products, your leather goods can and will last a lifetime. I like to schedule a cleaning once a month of all my (most used) goods, (I’d be conditioning for hours otherwise!) A small investment in maintenance transforms everyday leather into something far more meaningful—an heirloom that tells your story for years to come and a beautiful gift for anyone in your future as well.
Best of luck and share pictures of your patina! #gtleather
Take care y’all
